About Kate……
Kate Jackson is a graduate of the Material Art & Design program at OCAD University (Toronto, Canada). After a three-year residency in the Textile Studio at Harbourfront Centre, she moved to Banff Alberta to work at the Banff Centre Library and teach workshops in the Visual Arts Department. Kate Jackson has now settled in Hamilton, Ontario and maintains her studio practice out of two rooms in her attic. Her studio practice focuses on a technique called Fragile Embroidery – embroidering on materials considered too weak to withstand needle and thread. Kate works with patience and grief as a conceptual theme in her work and a necessity in production. She has embroidered Kleenex, paper towel, cheerios, flowers, peeling paint, and ice.
Kate has taken part in residencies and shown her work throughout Canada and internationally including residencies at The Banff Centre, Alberta, Kings Landing, New Brunswick, and exhibitions in Cheongju, South Korea, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary Alberta.
Kate also takes on commissioned projects from time to time, allowing the challenges presented in these projects to refresh her approaches to materials and techniques.
Kate is also a dedicated educator, teaching in the Craft & Design Program, the Visual & Creative Arts Program, and the Art Fundamentals Program at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario as well as the Material Arts & Design Program at OCADU.
